MPP1 Journal 5

Mon 14Nov11 – This day began with a change in time slot of drum instrumental lesson, I got in at 9am! But it was productive and I had an hour lesson instead of a 30min one. Pete & I worked on more paradiddles, drum grooves and my drum transcription of Rob Seeger’s “Old Time Rock & Roll”.

Had to shrink it down from 4 pages.

Later that evening, I had a practice session for Balloon Project recording of “Just a Smile” by Ben Brown, just to prep me for this Sat’s recording in the studio.

Following which, I had a rehearsal with Robert Mulder and band. We covered the new songs from last week, which in my opinion sounded a lot better today as we had a better idea of how we wanted it to sound. This is in prep for the gig on Thursday at The Brink.

 

Tue 15Nov11 – Rehearsal with Gemma (worked on “Blue Skies” and “Lily”) + Orian (vocal parts) which I crafted a few.

Improv lesson this & last week, we did this:

It’s quite tough to get. Steve Barry wants us not to count the bars but “feel” it.

 

Wed 16Nov11 – Rehearsal with Robert Mulder & Band in preparation for “Art.Love.Local” @ The Brink the following day. Because we didn’t have our drummer (Alec Brits), Runar (Bass) had to play the kick drum and I had to double up on some snare parts. So it was basically an acoustic set.

Fri 18Nov11 – Reh with Orian and the band in preparation for a gig on Monday – I’m on backing vox and auxialiary percussion.

The Balloons Project Recording of “Just A Smile – Ben Brown”

Recorded glockenspiel, shaker, triangle and tambourine. Had some trouble with the shaker. Tomos (engineer) felt that it’s better to play it crotchets with accent on first beat despite the snare drum accenting on the 3rd beat. But whatever sounds best should go into the rec! All in all, I had fun and it was an experience because my back was hurting from trying to stand really still and not making extra noises during the recording.
