MPP1 Journal 4

Had quite an eventful week.

Beginning on Monday, I had a Balloon Project rehearsal with the house band. The idea of having the band was for recording the Balloon Project “special”-compilation-album, Ben Brown’s Final Project (The Uber Tube, The new 3rd Degree <- what I heard from Keith Mullin) and lastly, for playing live promotional shows.

On Tuesday, I had a rehearsal with Gemma Dunleavy. Gemma’s band hopes to gig ard Liverpool. However, her current drummer is studying in Brighton Institute of Modern Music which I forsee might be a problem when we do get more gigs. I was told I might have to multi-play 4 different percussion instruments. ie. Right hand; glocks, left hand; shaker, right leg; kick drum, left leg; tambourine. On top of that, I have to do backing vocals as well. We are still exploring the other possibilities.

Also had a rehearsal with Orian on Tuesday for the 2ube show on Fri & at Zanzibar (Seel St) on Sat.

Robert Mulder band reh on Wed wasn’t what I expected. We managed to run through 3 new songs (of the EP). I also suggested playing some of these new stuff at The Brink’s gig next Thur to get familiarize with it. Got to bring my Djembe next reh, one of the songs would sound good with a Djembe on it.

Today (Sunday) was spent practicing drums in LIPA from 2pm-5pm. Did some Motown (MJ, Diana Ross and The Supremes). Still listening to some MJ now, trying to define the grooves of Motown and that era. Absolutely respect drummers of those days. Such simple grooves but they kept it so steadily and it doesn’t get in the way of the rest of the band/orchestra. Yet at the same time, it’s so well defined that if you hear a certain drum groove, you just know what song is playing! Ther’s quite a wide use of tambourines then, just found out while listening.

Just bought a Djembe bag. This year has seen me purchasing most instruments so far. Need a paying Part-time job soon, wouldn’t be able to survive without one. (INSTRUMENTS ARE SO EXPENSIVEEEEEEEEEEEE..)

On a side note, more bands are looking me up, hope this goes well.
